My former neighbor and I like to hit up random Mexican spots around town. My neighbor had chosen a place is South Phoenix but turns out it is a food truck that doesn't open until 6pm, we were looking for a lunch spot and something indoors so we pivoted to this spot I found with a bit of googling in that area. It is a pretty unassuming building along 16th St with a small parking lot. Nice little hole in the wall with 10 or so tables and a pretty steady stream of customers for 12 pm on a Saturday.
We ordered the Media Parrillada - which is a parcel of food for 2 which includes 3 meats of our choosing on a heated chafing dish sort of thing with grilled green onion, jalapeno and tomatoes. 7 tortillas (corn, flour or mixed), 2 cups of charro beans, a small ramekin of guacamole and some pickled onions.
We opted for carne asada, chicken and costilla(beef ribs) - the chicken was a couple of pieces of their charbroiled chicken on the bone - they have platters of char grilled chicken as well. I had seen a food travel show of a place in Tucson that does the costilla tacos where they scrape the meat off the bone after grilling to put in the tacos - here though it came on the bone. All the meats were tender and flavorful and a good amount.
We also opted for for a lemonade and a horchata. Both homemade and tasty.
Highly recommend if you are in the area
