Growing up Jewish in Los Angeles meant there was only one way to spend a Christmas dinner - having Chinese!

So, let's get together a share a bracha (blessing) for the season and enjoy the bounty that is Shaanxi Garden in Mesa. Yes, I called and made sure they'd be open!

5pm (unless anyone wants to suggest otherwise)

Shaanxi Garden
57 N Dobson Rd.
Mesa, AZ 85201

PS. Another tradition growing up in LA was to hit Disneyland on Christmas day to enjoy the run of the park before the holiday visitors show up. In keeping (kinda) with that tradition, my family will be going to see Mary Poppins before supper. And, of course, you're all welcome to join us for what should be a day "practically perfect in every way."

So how was it? I've given up on eating at Chinese restaurants on Christmas Day because there always seems to be a long wait for a table. I fear that we gentiles have spoiled what was a fine Jewish tradition by trying to get in on the action.

Chengdu is always a good choice. I went to Hong Kong Asian Diner last night and it was a nightmare. 90 minutes of the phone ringing before we got our food. I was cool waiting, but my friends were stabby as fuck. We nearly walked out. Once the food did come though, it was the best I've had yet!

You snooze you lose. No wait at Shaanxi. Delicious as usual. Tried a new dish (that our waiter tried talking me out of ordering) XI'AN PAO MO which was fantastic and very different (for me) than anything I've had previously there.

Lesson to be learned: stick with the Jew when observing Jewish tradition. 😇

I did a little searching on this dish, and it is described as a stew of lamb and bread. Is that what you got? I think I also see cellophane noodles in the bowl.
