In the past year, two different friends have visited Belgium and had waffles there. Traditional Belgian waffles. And how much better they were than what we get served here.

Any local choices for getting something close to the actual deliciousness?

It's an interesting topic, but that link left me with more questions than answers. The waffles in the photos don't look all that different from other waffles I've eaten, so I'm not sure if they're Belgian or American. The recipe and prefatory text explain how to make Belgian waffles, but don't give me much insight into how to tell if what I'm served is authentically Belgian or not. With that mind, I can tell you about waffles I really like, but I have zero insight into how they might compare to what is served in Belgium. That said, I like the waffles at Birdhaus Coffeebar on Vernon Street in Midtown. The place is a coffee bar with no indoor seating; the only hot food served is waffles. Since I'm getting them from a streetside vendor and they're served like a hand food, they feel sort of Belgian to me, but I have no idea how they are leavened.

To preface this, let's be clear about the fact that I can't spot a correct waffle. But, have you tried Alo Cafe?
As a Euro-Cafe, it seems like a good place to start.

A little dated but a few of these are still open for Belgian wafffles.

+1 for Alo Cafe

Tried Alo (loved it) but didn't try the waffles. A return visit will be necessary!
