Re: DeSoto Central Market

Yardbird + Larder just debuted a new lunch menu. It's a printed menu and is shorter than the chalkboard, which it supersedes during daytime. The bad news is that dishes like the perlou are now available only at night. The good news is that some new sandwiches and salads suitable to midday dining are...

Re: Little Miss BBQ

Did this work for anyone? I tried at 11:06 and got a message that all drivers were busy. I got that message consistently for about 20 minutes, but I kept on tapping my iPhone and by 11:30 I had a LIttle MIss meal waiting at the curb outside my office. I removed the two slices of white bread so the ...

Thanks. In that case, the $18 promotion really will be a good value.

Re: Little Miss BBQ

Having never been to Little Miss, I'm curious: How much does a two-meat plate & a bottle of Hubert's normally cost? $18 sounds reasonable to have this bounty delivered to my office, so I'm not complaining -- just wondering what the same meal would cost on site.

Re: Jorge's Chicken & Waffles

I found the waffles at Jorge's dry during my first visit, but perhaps they've improved since then. The chicken was quite good, and I like the Southwestern / Mexican touches like ceviche. The beer selection was snoozers when the restaurant opened, but I'm told some more appealing craft brews have bee...

Re: kitchen 56 - south scottsdale

I'll have to try it sometime based on your favorable report, but unless the restaurant has moved, it's within Phoenix city limits. The border is at 60th Street in that part of town.

I'm inclined to agree. I find the bread at St. Francis a bit more sour that Noble, but I'm not sure if either will be at the intensity desired here.

Various farmers markets, along with the Noble Eatery at 22nd St. & McDowell. I most often buy it at the Roadrunner Park farmers market in northeast Phoenix, but I'm sure there's at least one East Valley market that carries it.

Re: Sourdough

I'm not sure what's sour enough for your taste. The bread at St. Francis is based on a sourdough starter, and I believe Noble Bread is as well. Are you looking for a more intense taste than what those loaves offer?

Re: Umami

Crayons. At the bar today the crayons appear to have been replaced with pencils. I watched with curiosity as the bartenders pulled out big rubber erasors, erased the pencil markings, and re-use the menues. Maybe the kitsch of crayons lost to the cost effectiveness of pencils and erasors and not hav...

I'm not big on "bracket" contests -- mainly because I'm not a sports person. Nevertheless, Pomo fans may be happy to know that the restaurant has won a pizza bracket contest staged by the Downtown Devil, the online newspaper of the ASU Downtown Campus: http://downtowndevil.com/2015/05/08/71145/pizza...

Re: Lolo's Chicken & Waffles

Back when I was a kid, we used to travel to Mobile, AL, and my family there would always take us to this mini-chain named Cock of the Walk . They'd flip cornbread across the room and serve all the food family-style in metal pie pans - the food was fine, but the catfish really stuck with me. I agree...

Is the black rice a gimmick or is it prepared the same as traditional sushi rice? IOW, any benefits to going against the grain(groan). The restaurant sometimes quotes this passage, which can be found at multiple websites: "Brown rice is good for you, but black rice is even better. That’s because th...

Hi. I'm not all that active here, but I'm glad to see some love for Tarbell's. Like you, I've never had a bad meal there. Because Tarbell's now been around for over two decades, the restaurant sometimes gets overlooked in food-centric discussion.

Re: Harumi Sushi

I agree with this assessment. Harumi is a nice neighborhood sushi spot, and its neighborhood just happens to be the Downtown core. At lunch, it operates with a counter service model. Most customers either buy food from the grab-and-go case or order bentos made assembly-line style. At night, the rest...
