Re: Otakumen

Anyone planning to go this week should know that Otakumen hasn't been keeping its posted hours since the Friday grand opening. I tried to return Saturday but was told they didn't know when they'd open that day. Sunday, it was announced the restaurant would be closed and reopening Monday. Today, it w...

Re: Otakumen

Just got back from the grand opening. I arrived around 10:40 and was among the first 50, so I was able to enjoy a free bowl in exchange for a packet of instant ramen purchased down the street at CVS. To repeat my rant above, the line got very slow because of all sorts of customizations people were r...

Re: Otakumen

I'm seeing a lot of high-maintenance requests on the Facebook event page for the grand opening. They can all be condensed into a single question: Do you have vegan, paleo, organic, non-GMO, low-carb, gluten-free, MSG-free, flavor-free, and texture-free ramen made of nothing more than sunshine and fa...

Re: Pizza Sauce

I make something I call marinara and use it on homemade pizza all the time. I think I read somewhere that true marinara doesn't have onions in it. If so, my sauce is something other than marinara, but it works well on pizza nonetheless.

Re: Oasis Bakery & Cuisine

After a family dinner at Oasis last night, I'm now beginning to understand the issue with the hummus. The hummus pictured on the falafel plate pictured above is unadorned, and since the hummus at Oasis doesn't seem to incorporate a lot of garlic or lemon juice, I understand how it could come across ...

Re: Food writing

I was looking at the Village Voice tonight and came upon this article discussing NY's top 20 dishes. Is it just me or is this OTP pretentious? There's very little there that looks/sounds appetizing. http://www.villagevoice.com/restaurants/the-20-best-new-york-city-dishes-of-2015-8063230 A few items...

Re: Otakumen

With the recent demise of Umami and vehicular invasion of Tampopo, I'm looking forward to more ramen options. There's also a place called SoSoBa on its way to Roosevelt Row, just over half a mile north of Otakumen's location in the Downtown Phoenix core.

Re: Where to get a Christmas Stollen?

I picked up a stollen at Karl's today. There are still plenty in stock, as well as all sorts of other seasonal treats. There are also some packages of Baker's Daughter chocolates in sizes perfect for stockings. Combine a visit to Karl's with a meal at the Salvadoran restaurant across the parking lot...

Re: Paz Cantina

The bad news is that Paz Cantina's former home was demolished yesterday. The good news is that Paz Cantina is now operating as a food truck on the south side of Roosevelt between 4th and 5th streets. The food is just as good as it was at the restaurant. The even better news is that in a little more ...

Just announced on FB they're closing Mill Ave. location and looking for some place cheaper. Will be serving until they run out on Thursday. The funny thing is the restaurant isn't even on Mill Avenue. Sure, it's just a short walk from Mill, but the hidden location probably makes it difficult to bri...

Re: Maizies - closed

I saw their facebook post just before Thanksgiving but wasn't able to make it to their last weekend. It seems very sudden. Anyone have the inside scoop? No inside knowledge, but that's unfortunate news. I fondly remember sitting on the patio during brunch watching the trains go by on the weekend ra...

Re: Who's interested in this specialized cooking class?

I've read many serious articles that make a strong argument that insect consumption may be a practical, even necessary, way to feed a growing world population. Even so, it's hard to read this without thinking it's something from the Onion.

I took the train over to Tempe yesterday to meet a friend and we shared the following: daily soup (butternut squash), patty melt, What the Cluck sandwich, fries with lemon aioli, and a PB&J cookie for dessert. I should disclose that the last item was complimentary, perhaps because the owner knew me ...

Re: Gertrude's at Desert Botanical Garden

I have now eaten brunch twice at Gertrude's. There's been nothing unpleasant about my meals, but both the food and service have seemed rather ordinary in relation to the price -- especially since there is no discount for DBG members, a little bonus that most restaurants situated within cultural attr...
