restaurants per capita

I'm surprised the Phoenix Metro Area is pretty far down on this list. I never seem to find time for all the places I want to try. Maybe it can be explained, at least in part, by newly developed areas on the outskirts of town where people always complain about not having enough choices. In brand new ...

Thank you for the suggestion; however, I tried two photos and neither was reduced in file size enough to fit within the microscopic dimensions this site demands.

Re: Szechwan Palace - COFCO

Szechwan Palace has closed its doors. This may be the final nail in the coffin for the Chinese Cultural Center as originally conceived. Fortunately, far more Asian dining options have emerged along Dobson Road in Mesa and Chandler. https://www.azcentral.com/story/entertainment/dining/2018/12/17/szec...

Re: Root and Soul

I tried Root & Soul at its original location at the DeSoto Central Market and found it quite promising. I particularly liked the shrimp & grits I had for brunch one time. The side of collards I ordered was also very nice. I am pleased to hear the restaurant has been resurrected. The new location is ...

Re: Avatar Resize Enabled!!!

Here's what might seem a dumb question, but I simply cannot figure this out. How do board members reduce profile photos to the postage stamp dimensions allowed: 90 x 90, 49 kb max? I don't have a single photo with dimensions that small, and if I try to crop something, I end up with just a picture of...

Mekong Plaza & Environs

A quick update after a trip to Mekong Plaza last night. The family wanted the familiar Cantonese favorites of the flagship restaurant, Mekong Palace, but I took the opportunity to note a few recents arrivals and departures: Taiwan Express has closed. Kingo Bowl has closed. It was an interesting plac...

CityEats contest

Interesting contest from CityLab. I'm still trying to make the difficult choice of which dish from which restaurant to nominate.

Re: group eats/drinks near the Phoenix convention center?

SLA definitely chose an *interesting* time of year to come to Phoenix. To keep the walking in the June heat to only a few blocks radius from the PCC, I would suggest you look at District, Mancuso's, and the Arrogant Butcher. All three are quite close to the convention center, have private spaces, go...

It's also not located in Tempe. The nearest locations are in Ahwatukee and Chandler. Of course, my suggestion of the Stockyards is outside Tempe as well.

Re: Non-chain Tempe Steakhouse

I can't think of anything within Tempe city limits, but the Stockyards is on the east side of Phoenix less than a mile from the Tempe border. I enjoy both the food and the history there.

Re: Otakumen

I just got this email from Otakumen, which is now merging with Pat and Waldos, to make the slightly less confusing "Noodle Bar". I hope this is a step in the right direction. While I wasn't blown away by Otakumen, it was a pretty solid meal, and the flow in the dining area definitely needed this tw...

Re: Location, Location, Location

I used to work in that neighborhood and must have passed that building a thousand times without seeing its potential. Now that you've pointed it out, I agree that it might be a good restaurant space. It would probably benefit from a business model centered around breakfast and lunch since the immedi...

Re: Umami

Tried the new Umami at Shady Park tonight. The food is the same as it ever was with all the same tares as before: shio, shoyu, paitan, miso, vegan. The toppings are mostly the same, although the chicken is now fried. The bento offerings are also the same as at the previous location. The environment ...

I was thinking of trying this ramen place, but I haven't seen any recent posts and many comments on yelp seem pretty bad. Have we seen no improvement? If not this place, then what is your favorite traditional ramen joint in the valley? Thanks! Looking for tasty ramen I have no problem with the rame...

Re: Roadtrip recco: PHX to Santa Fe

With our road trip along this route now complete, here's where we stopped on the way to Santa Fe and back. Payson AZ -- Ayothaya Thai Cafe, a nice little Thai place in the shopping center anchored by Basha's at the intersection of routes 87 & 260. We had satay, egg rolls, yellow curry with tofu, and...

Re: Roadtrip recco: PHX to Santa Fe

We're taking a family road trip to Santa Fe this summer and will be taking the first route you have described. I've driven it before, and it's fairly efficient, although the segment between Payson and Holbrook can be pretty lonely. Since my last drive along that route was more than two decades ago, ...

That's far beyond the usual for a home kitchen! (meant as a compliment).

Maybe post this as a Facebook event for ease of RSVP and calendaring?

Re: The Kettle Black

Just had lunch there. It's amazing what they've done with the old Burger King space. The interior is now all dark wood with no trace of fast food decor left. They're offering a one-page simplified menu during the soft opening phase. Although the word "gastropub" has been mentioned, this menu was mos...

Re: Oasis Bakery & Cuisine

One minor disappointment: For the second time, there was absolutely no pastry available. I'm beginning to wonder if the "bakery" in the restaurant's name is aspirational rather than actual. I enjoyed a small banana smoothie as a liquid dessert instead. Third time's a charm. Oasis was fully stocked ...

Re: The Kettle Black

I was doing an errand around the corner this afternoon and walked by. The sign outside the door said "open," so I walked in. There were still people hanging pictures on the wall and putting things in place, but there were also a few customers seated at the bar. It appears a soft opening has indeed o...
