Re: Copper Kettle in Chandler

The Copper Kettle family definitely is an interesting dynamic. When I first moved to Phoenix in 2006, there was just one Copper Kettle on Guadalupe and Dobson (near where Cornish Pasty is now) and the entire extended family worked there, including the affable son from Curry Corner, and at the Copper...

Re: Caffe Sarajevo - West Side Bosnian

Great to see this joint getting some love. I must admit that I've totally failed the nerds in noting down my long-ago west side adventures before leaving town (although I do recall trading Bosnian pointers with icecreamchef back in 2006). The last time I went to Cafe (Old Town?) Sarajevo was maybe a...

Re: Toronto

Timely post, as I'm also a Toronto native (although I haven't been back in a couple decades). However, I am planning on a return trip hopefully this year and so have been poking around the web to see what the city has to offer. There was this recent article in the NYT ( Toronto's Ethnic Buffet ) as ...

Re: Minneapolis?

Sorry for getting back after Thanksgiving. Always wanted to make it Hmong Village in St Paul, but it wasn't in the cards. Alas. But New Bohemia is good stuff! Man - I have quite a list of places to write about, but I'll start with one of my final dinners out: Babani's in St. Paul, which claims to be...

Re: Minneapolis?

My duration in the twin cities is soon drawing to a close. Next week will be my final one there. Will definitely update the list with the good finds (must be at least somewhat good with the 10 extra pounds I've put on since I started working there!).

Re: Al Zohour - Moroccan (Yes, Moroccan) in Phoenix

Icecreamchef suggested dinner here when I was in town briefly a few weeks ago. Once I realized which shopping center it was in as I headed over, I started laughing. I used to come here all the time for lunch back in 2006-07 when I worked one exit up the freeway. But I totally forgot about the whole ...

Re: Minneapolis?

KFrankMN and themis - Thanks for the updates to the list! Back in MN after a beautiful weekend in the Bay Area. Man, it is COLD this week! Isn't winter like over? Walking around 14F temps trying to find dinner is not good times. I'm staying at 7th St between Nicollet Mall and Hennepin, and trudged ...

Re: What are your favorite joints in SF? (and nearby environ

Haven't made it to the Ferry Building Saturday market in eons (2004?), but I get my Roli Roti fix from the Grand Lake farmers market in Oakland (which is also a great market). Speaking of Oakland, I've eaten at some great places there recently. Will put a list up soon.

Re: Minneapolis?

KFrankMN , thanks. :D Funny that it's my colleague who lives in Manhattan that's warning me never to step outside in Minneapolis. As if winters in NY are remotely tropical. Anyway, good to know I won't be flash frozen outside. Going shopping today for a coat that'll hopefully fit over my suit. In a...

Re: What are your favorite joints in SF? (and nearby environ

It'll be interesting to see if this trend picks up here in SF. I can understand it becoming an increasing nuisance, with the sheer amount of traffic these places get, escpecially with such a tech-addicted (and not always discreet or respectful) younger crowd (as compared to Phoenix). That said, I'm ...

Re: What are your favorite joints in SF? (and nearby environ

It was actually really refreshing (especially in overly-wired SF) to see not a single person doing anything but fully enjoying their meal and their company and engaging with the waitstaff. Not a single cell phone in sight. No photo taking. No texting. No calling. No surfing. As guilty as I am of tak...

Re: What are your favorite joints in SF? (and nearby environ

Went to La Ciccia [/url] last night on a last minute reservation with a friend, and all I can say is wow. Small place but amazing Sardinian food and the service was top-notch. I'm bitter that these guys opened after I moved out from living down the street for 8 years, but whatever. Glad to experienc...

Also will look for this aforementioned "Juicy Lucy"...seems like a number of joints in Minneapolis serve them. Who even knew they were a "thing"?

Re: Minneapolis?

Wow...thanks everyone! This is a great list to get me started...although whether I visit any of them in the upcoming weeks is dependent on if they're not connected via the downtown skyways (my colleagues have warned me to not even think of stepping outside for another several weeks). For the most pa...

Minneapolis?

Hey guys - I just found out that I'm going to start a new multi-month assignment in the tropical paradise of Minneapolis, commuting back and forth from SF weekly. I know absolutely squat about the city and haven't heard anything about its food culture, apart from hearing there's a lot of Somali food...

Re: Southern Spice, Phxmacbear , when my friends and I did the weekend buffet, it was evenly split between north and south Indian dishes. I wasn't particularly fond of my meal, but as I mentioned, my friend, whose family hails from Karnataka, thought it was amazing. Very much could be due to pretty ...

Re: Indian Food

As far as chaat goes, quite a while ago where Dhaba is now used to be just another wing of Little India market where you got to rent Bollywood movies, and there was a chaat counter in the back, where back in 2006 or so I used to drive down to indulge in pani puri and the like. These days, New India ...

Re: Indian Food

FYI since many of you seem to be fans of Udupi and haven't mentioned this place yet...there's another south Indian restaurant on Scottsdale Rd not far from Udupi called Southern Spice (it's in the same shopping center as Big Lots, if I remember correctly). Went for weekend lunch buffet last year. My...

Either location of George & Dragon is usually where I've seen many a Man U game live (pox on them, though, I'm a City supporter - although I do agree about the Scouser scum bit). ;) Assuming G&D may show the SB, if having Shepherd's Pie during the half-time show sounds somewhat appealing. I actually...

Re: Khyber Halal Restaurant

It's like the Zankou's Chicken saga...Phoenix style. All kidding aside, I wish both locations the very best. Z-grill at Zam Zam was always hit or miss, depending on who was there doing the cooking and managing the kitchen. Hopefully this time around it will stay consistent (and consistently good). A...
