Re: Naked BBQ

Endofdiscone, you mentioned Black's in Lockhart, Texas. Since I posted in this thread, I had my first Texas BBQ experience at the Terry Black's in Austin, the one run by two sons of the Black family in Lockhart. That was an incredible experience, now I know what BBQ brisket Texas style can be, prett...

Re: Bitter & Twisted

[quote="Bax"] With so many other great places for drinks (Crudo, Okra, Clever Koi, Parlor, Welcome Diner, The Gladly, etc.) that are more convenient, B&T still hasn't proven itself worth the bother of going downtown. /quote] I agree completely. In the times I've been there, B&T has a real problem wi...

Hot Noodles Cold Sake

Yet another ramen joint, which seems to be one of the major current foodie trends lately, but this one is in North Scottsdale for folks who live or have a reason to be up there. Joshua Hebert from Posh is the proprietor, as most of you probably know, brining his Ramen Tuesdays to a full time ramen s...

Re: Turkdish

Looks like this place is in Chandler and I don't get down there very often so it might be awhile before I have a chance to check it out. I lived in Turkey for a year in the 80s and was crazy for the quality of the food I had nearly every day. I've been to some fairly good Turkish restaurants in the ...

Re: Tiki Trend

We had a good time at the opening of Tiki Thursday at Market Street Kitchen two weeks ago. It was well attended with lots of tiki attire, busy the entire two hours we were there with people enjoying themselves. Guest bartender Travis Nass was helping out, making fine drinks from the menu. I'd imagin...

Tiki Trend

Seems like tiki cocktails are trending now and in the recent past in the Valley, with Undertow about to open later this month, Tiki Tuesdays as the Ostrich, Tiki Thursdays at Market Street Kitchen starting this week (Rubee wrote a nice review here http://www.writeonrubee.com/new-events/2016/tiki-thu...

Re: Naked BBQ

We've been twice and loved it both times. Both times we went for an early Saturday dinner around 5:30 and it was pretty empty both times. I hope they are doing enough business at lunch to keep them going. I like not having to wait at all, but its a little bit quiet in there without a few more custom...

Re: Buck & Rider

Barbara were you there on a weekend? Happy Hour is only M-F but it goes til 7 PM so we can at least make it down there after work from where we live in North Scottsdale. The raw bar half off and cocktails are the reasons we go. Good oyster selection and I like their mignonette. They do the bill stra...

Re: Buck & Rider

We've been to happy hour a few times and although its crazy busy and a bit unpleasantly competitive to get a seat (a guy holding two barstools by himself and his "date" doesn't show up for another 15 minutes even when two people are waiting), we've really enjoyed the food and drinks each time we've ...

Re: Honor Amongst Thieves

And now I hear that founding bartender Stephanie Teslar was gone from Honor Amongst Thieves before it had been open a week. The place is owned by a group that owns a bunch of night clubs. Its making sense now.

Honor Amongst Thieves

We checked out Honor Amongst Thieves (upstairs from the new Stock and Stable) on Saturday night. I guess my expectations get too high when I read about a new place that sounds like its going to be a cool speakeasy vibe: (This is almost the same revue I gave The Ostrich several months ago) dark, old ...

Re: Naked BBQ

Good rec! We went on Saturday evening and the chopped brisket sandwich was really good and the experience was just as you described, nothing but positive. I saw a table with the BYO six pack of beer. I didn't ask about an official policy, but I wouldn't mind having some bourbon with my BBQ next time...

Re: Artizen at The Camby

Its been more than a month since we hit up Parlour. We have been twice since Libby left and I just felt they had slipped in execution, not taking as much time and care with the drinks, the small details that make the difference between pretty good and excellent. Glad to hear that was not your recent...

Re: Artizen at The Camby

On Valentine's weekend we ate there and had a damn good lobster bisque off the tasting menu, but its not on the permanent menu. It was fricking good, like you said, sop up every last drop good! I had the duck tagliatelle, too and it was tasty but not quite as impressive as the lobster bisque. My wif...

Re: Okra

We hit Okra for the first time this past Sunday afternoon for happy hour and had quite a good experience. It was pretty empty at 4:00 PM on a Sunday, not too surprising, but some folks did trickle in. Brandon Casey was at the bar, Jackson later told us they are friends and go back a few years workin...

The Ostrich

We went to the Ostrich Bar last night and it was overall a disappointing experience for us. My expectations were admittedly high, thinking it was going to be a really hip speakeasy. The folks behind it and things others have written about it certainly gave me that impression. http://www.azcentral.co...

Re: New Orleans

I'd go see bartender Chris Hannah at Arnaud's 75 bar and just chat him up and let him make you some drinks based on your preferences. Bar Tonique on Rampart has some seriously great cocktails in a funky, dark, smokey setting and a great happy hour. I'd eat at any John Besh or Donald Link restaurant,...

Re: Christopher's / Christopher's Crush

I'm pleased to see Christopher's getting some positive attention on this board. Its still my fave restaurant in the valley. He doesn't change his menu very often and the focus is not on innovation or the exotic, but just on classics done well and its a joy to watch that kitchen run and put out such ...

Re: Long Waits for Food

I'll add my thanks, Scott, for your detailed and thoughtful response to my questions. I knew it was a complex issue, but did not know the specifics. Now I do, so thanks for taking the time. I truly appreciate someone who has the dedication and passion to go all the trouble you do, by all reports, to...
