loss of a forum member

I'm sure many members of this board have already heard the news. In case anyone missed it, golbsalt, who was active on this board in years past, died unexpectedly over the weekend:

Re: restaurants per capita

Plus, restaurants are just bigger here. I'd be willing to bet that cities with more sprawl tend to be further down the list. In a sardine can metro region like San Francisco, restaurants are only going to be so big and you're going to need more of them to serve the same number of people. Just one f...

Re: Hawaiian Plate Lunches

This past weekend was the annual Arizona Aloha Festival at Tempe Beach Park. As we do almost every year, we spent a day at Tempe Beach Park enjoying the food, shopping, and music, along with a quick walk down to the Tempe Arts Center to see all the excess water from recent rains and snow melt spilli...

I heard that the cooking staff from Szechwan Palace has landed at Asian Fusion Cafe in Tempe in that corner of Rural and University.
Good tip. I've mean meaning to check out AFC for a while, and this is yet another reason.

Thanks. I think I'm going to try bookmarking "unread posts" and seeing if that behaves more predictably.

New Posts

Question about the "new posts" link. I have that bookmarked because it seems like the quickest way to see what's new on the board without having to navigate deep into folders for specific topics. Sometimes, it will keep showing me a post it has identified as new even after I've seen it a few times. ...

Re: Bagels

^Totally off the topic of bagels, but that classic Seinfeld clip made me wonder about the status of Kenny Rogers Roasters. Apparently, the chain now exists predominantly in Asia with only one U.S. location left in California.

Re: Bagels

Also, Montreal bagels are another animal - like deep dish and pizza (NOT THE SAME) - so I'm mixing those qualities in my determination. Despite growing up near NYC, I’ve always considered Montreal the place that defines bagels. Your comment about Montreal bagels being different had me intrigued, so...

...Odelay Bagels, which are available once a week in central Phoenix at Nelson’s. I've never been to Odelay's own bakery and shop in Ahwatukee, but I've enjoyed their bagels at Desert Roots Kitchen in Tempe. They're not available every day, but when they are, DRK will serve them toasted on their ow...

Re: Mekong Plaza & Environs

Quick update:

The Bao place is still in the works, but looks pretty far along.

Xian Fusing Cafe has opened ("softly" -- see photo) in the space formerly occupied by Taiwan Express. The menu appears to be still Taiwanese.

Hawaiian Plate Lunches

I went to the grand opening of Paradise Hawaiian BBQ's new location on Adams Street in Downtown Phoenix today. The restaurant recently moved from its former location on College Avenue in Tempe. Paradise is a place that specializes in plate lunches with Japanese and Korean influences via Hawaii. With...

Re: Buckeye anyone?

Not finding anything worthwhile near my meeting site in Buckeye, I decided to stop halfway back to my office at Piazza Romana in Avondale. This place is under the same ownership as La Piazza al Forno in Glendale and La Piazza PHX in Phoenix, but it’s different in both format and menu. The specialty ...

Buckeye anyone?

I have a meeting in Buckeye this morning that will end around lunchtime. I've hiked nearby in the White Tanks, but always with a picnic lunch. Searching via Yelp and Google Maps shows mostly chains, but maybe there's a hidden gem I'm missing. Any suggestions? I'm trying to stay near I-10 since I'll ...

Re: OBON

I've been to Obon in Downtown Tucson and really enjoyed it. I sat at the bar, ate the restaurant's eponymous ramen, and had a spicy cocktail called "One Night in Bangkok" that was made before my eyes. Part of my positive experience may have been, as you suggest, that things are just going to be bett...

Re: Actual Belgian Waffles

It's an interesting topic, but that link left me with more questions than answers. The waffles in the photos don't look all that different from other waffles I've eaten, so I'm not sure if they're Belgian or American. The recipe and prefatory text explain how to make Belgian waffles, but don't give ...

Re: Have A Merry Jewish Traditional Christmas!

Tried a new dish (that our waiter tried talking me out of ordering) XI'AN PAO MO which was fantastic and very different (for me) than anything I've had previously there. I did a little searching on this dish, and it is described as a stew of lamb and bread. Is that what you got? I think I also see ...

Re: Have A Merry Jewish Traditional Christmas!

So how was it? I've given up on eating at Chinese restaurants on Christmas Day because there always seems to be a long wait for a table. I fear that we gentiles have spoiled what was a fine Jewish tradition by trying to get in on the action.

Re: Avatar Resize Enabled!!!

I must have manually resized my avatar and not thought much about it. I found a current version of Avatar Resize, the site will now accept images of any size and automatically scale them. It worked -- not only was my avatar resized, but I also look two decades younger! Of course, using a photo from...
