Re: Barrio Bagel & Slice

"Overcoming first review post shyness to shill for..."

Two things:

1) Hooray for overcoming first post shyness! Thank you for an excellent post! (I, myself, am remiss in having not gotten here yet.)

2) I know you meant it colloquially, but it's only "shilling" if you're connected to the ...

Re: Durant's

To be clear, I don't necessarily think the changes will be entirely negative. To a certain extent, they're inevitable given the economics of the moment.

No, a standard Mastro's menu will definitely be an improvement over what Durant's has been serving the past few years. That kitchen was just ...

Re: Durant's

Yeah, I think they screwed the pooch here. They're trying to shoehorn a standard-issue wannabe trendy Mastro's menu into a throwback steakhouse. I was really hoping they'd be smarter than this.

The model is the Golden Steer in Las Vegas. This is not that.

Re: LeDu Thai

I often see the word "funk" here, but I'm not really sure I understand the meaning. For me, "funk" has two uses: 1) In music, where the connotation is thoroughly positive 2) More rarely, to describe a bad mood like depression or a bad odor like sweaty socks. The connotation is not at all positive ...

Re: LeDu Thai

FWIW, that pretty much tracks with my experience. I went last fall not too long after they opened, and came away feeling like it was... fine.

Solid enough somtum, if a little lightweight for my tastes. I crave the funk.

Re: Myke's Pizza inside of Cider Corps - Mesa

I think Myke's peach pizza is the perhaps the strongest counterpoint to the "fruit doesn't belong on pizza" trope I've ever tasted.

Maaaaan, sad I missed that gyoza pizza though. Reminds me a little of the (ancient history here) Peking duck pizza they had at CPK waaaaaaaaay back in the early '90s.

Re: Valentine

Well, by all public accounts, leaving was her choice, though it sounds like the precise timing was not her preference.

I'm sure she won't have a difficult time finding whatever gig she wants, provided she isn't also pulling a Donny. But it *is* pretty remarkable/depressing that a place that was on ...

Sadly, in a bit of unfortunate timing, it looks like she's going to be hitting them for somebody else :-/

Kid Sister - Tip Top Tipples and Charming Eats

I've been banging this drum for a while now, but Kid Sister continues to be one of my favorite additions to the scene over the past few years.

It is an excellent wine bar with a really curious and funky selection of natural wines, not to mention a whole bunch of other offbeat and unconventional ...

Noble Eatery — Sandwiches, Salads and Stellar Bread

No thread on Noble Eatery yet, so I figure it's time to get one started.

I popped in for a quick lunch with Kid #1 today, and managed to tear myself away from the Italian to try the special of the week:
