Re: Hopdoddy Burger Bar

It's on my regular lunch rotation. The Lamburger is the best thing on the menu, and the ahi burger is a close second. (and I can't believe I'm saying that)

They season the meat really, really well on the burgers.

Re: Frasher's Steakhouse - St. Louis by way of Scottsdale

As a St Louis native, I'm a huge fan of this place. Their rendition of St Louis style pizza is extremely faithful to the original, and I fully recognize that Provel cheese is an acquired taste....not to mention that it is highly processed and probably not actually cheese at all. As far as the menu g...

Re: Phoenix New Times

Mike Z - thanks for the kind words. I'm done writing for a while. Other priorities right now and too many other hobbies to pursue with not enough time to pursue them!

But I never seem to be able to star away for too long, so I'll probably chime-in from time-to-time or when they need me.

Re: Phoenix New Times

Although I've written for Phoenix New Times, I do not in any way speak on its behalf. However, the page layout, general architecture, and usability standards are set by corporate....not by the local folks. I'd venture to guess that many of the local employees are just as annoyed by it as you are. Ed...

Re: Goldman's Deli - Chicago-Style(?) Traditional Jewish Del

Their chopped liver is the best I've had anywhere....including NYC. They also do gefilte fish extremely well....good enough to make a believer out of the most stubborn gefilte fish hater.

Re: The Local - CLOSED

FWIW, I firmly believe that The Henry has taken a BIG bite out of smaller/independents in that area. It's irrefutable, IMHO. But, at the same time, I don't think that Fox is inherently bad....the "evil empire" so to speak. I do wonder, however, if the Fox Machine has run its course.....done some goo...

San Diego Bay Restaurant

Featured in this week's New Times is a review I wrote of San Diego Bay Restaurant, which features fantastic mariscos. A quick shout-out to the member of the Phx Food Nerd community who tipped me off to this place. It's a gem, and one of those reviews that made me happy to write. Great, deserving fol...

I'm glad it was such a hit! And I totally agree about the gumbo....such a bummer.

Re: Bourbon Steak

FWIW, we did a chef's tasting there before it was formally offered on the menu.....we just gave Chef Curtiss the latitude to do whatever the hell he wanted, as he knows our tastes well. I probably should have set a $$ threshold, but I believe that it came out to about $275 per person. It was well wo...

Re: Bourbon Steak

We were there on Friday night with our kids (they are incredibly welcoming to kids) and had a full-on feast. Chris Curtiss was off for his birthday but Sarah Garrant (his sous, also from Noca) was at the helm and did a stellar job. The food was very good, although I think the seafood platter is rath...

Nicely done, Joel. I was there not long after they opened and it was inconsistent at best, but your post makes me want to return.

MEA CULPA

Hi Food Nerds - In my most recent column for Chow Bella/New Times I made a reference to "food nerds" that contained a bit of sarcasm. (http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/bella/2013/09/fine_dining.php) Apparently I ruffled a few feathers in this community and wanted to make it clear that I used the ter...

Re: Indian Food

Stuck with the buffet which had two soups, chicken tikka masala, byriani, naan, tandoori chicken, several curries, palak paneer and a few others that I'm forgetting and likely mis-spelling. Nothing "exotic" - it was mostly "mainstream" Indian dishes but all done quite well, especially for a buffet. ...

I recently tried Karaikudi Palace at Shea/101. We only had the lunch buffet ($9.99) but were pleasantly surprised. The place was PACKED with Indian people. Good sign.

Re: Noca

The periodic "off night" notwithstanding, I can't think of a good reason why Noca shouldn't be a sure thing for FNA. The obsession with quality sourcing is a testament to their commitment to quality. I'm still not 100% sold on the new Italian-ish leanings, but it's hard to deny that the quality and ...

Re: Food Trucks: Your favorite bite?

Tried the Lobster Lady at the Barrett-Jackson Auction this weekend. Totally and completely underwhelmed. Was it bad? No. But it seemed incredibly overpriced for a very small portion. I realize that lobster isn't cheap but I'd gladly pay more elsewhere for a better - and larger - serving when I have ...
