Tumi's Peruvian

Post by Wilbur »

Last week we took some visitors to Tumi's in Mesa, as we had a group that included Meat and Potatoes people as well as some of the Give Me Exotics tribe. And as it turns out, this place is an excellent choice for both.

If you like the chicken and potatoes at Mister Pio's, and wished that you could eat food from the same milieu in a much wider spectrum of dishes, Tumi's is that place.

The chicken and potatoes features complex and addictive seasonings on perfectly cooked chicken, with a selection of dips you can combine to swish your Peruvian French fries (not pictured - my bad) around in. The chicken is cooked so that the seasoned skin is just short of crispy, while the meat is just past the tenderness of poaching. I prefer dark meat, but this whole chicken was delightful for both breast and thighs.

The fried rice is similarly complex in seasoning, and the rice has a great consistency and resistance than not every fried rice can achieve. This was my favorite, and I will definitely be back there in the next week or so to try some of the other, non-chicken, flavors.

The Cau Cau was a dish that includes diced tripe, and this is not an ingredient that I want a lot of on a regular basis. However, the smooth sauce and pyramid of rice and diced potatoes were a surprise hit with our group. Even the most die-hard Meat and Potatoes guy had two helpings of it.

We also tried the Purple Corn drink, which to me tasted strongly of cloves, which was a big hit among the Exotic Tastes enjoyers.

Service was good, and the weekday late lunch crowd was steady without being over-crowded. It is located in the strip mall at the corner of Guadalupe and Alma School road, behind the Green Tea Bistro and to the east of the White Dove shop.
